How Spirituality Can Defeat Anxiety

Spirituality Can Defeat AnxietyWhat’s all this theoretical talk about “spirituality,” this “inner core” stuff? Life is about enjoying yourself! Ask anyone and they’ll tell you that the purpose of life is just to “be happy.” That means good food, good company, lots of money and in-laws who live out of town. That’s the stuff that life is made of! You can’t sell me that psycho-babble about introspection and spirituality. Get a life!

Thinking that life is just “eat, drink and be merry,” is not conventional wisdom. After all, the 1960s were the rebellious generation. The ’70s were the “me” generation. The ’80s were the junk bond, greed generation. The ’90s were the “values” generation. In 2013 we’re in the “get my act together” generation. You have your own web page and an annoying cell phone that plays Mozart. You may have a couple of kids, a house in the suburbs, and a cottage in the country. But you are plagued by anxiety and worry. What is missing?

Inner Strength: Anxiety and Your Inner Dialogue

Drawing Inner Strength From Inner Dialogue

How do I know that I have the ability to solve, or at least deal wit my unique challenges? The simple truth is because I have an inner strength – perhaps hidden at times – I may not even be aware that I possess.

Let me share with you how I discovered my own inner strength:

The Anxiety Challenge: How to Outsmart Anxiety

Outsmarting AnxietyWhen you are faced with a crisis, the first thing you need is to address your “thinking” or “mindset.” If you see the issue before you as a crisis or problem, you have adopted an adversarial or “fighting” attitude towards it. A more productive approach is to view the crisis as a challenge or puzzle to solve, or, if not to solve, at least to deal with. It is not there to “break” you, but to bring out some hidden strength or ability from within you. It doesn’t make you evil or bad or a loser. These types of difficulties are not sent only to you. Everyone faces difficulties in life. If you are willing to adopt this attitude, you can “make friends” with the challenge, and then you will be much better equipped to outsmart anxiety.

Isn’t that just a mind game? By calling something a challenge instead of a problem, aren’t you just fooling yourself?

As with different types of trees so, too, there are different personality types; outgoing, warm, shy and generous, etc. If the spine or trunk of the tree gives a tree its strength, what is my strength? What do I stand for? What are my values?

The Root of the Self is Self-Esteem

Tips to improve self esteem.

Have you ever wondered how the Japanese Bonsai tree stays so perfectly small? Does the botanist clip the new sprouts every day with a tiny pair of scissors? Guess again. The secret lies in trimming the roots of the Bonsai tree. The crown of the tree matches the root system. Long roots give you a wide crown of branches. Short roots lead to short branches.

Just as roots are the foundation of a tree’s growth, the root of the self is your self-esteem. If you see yourself as a person of value and worth, then this will be reflected in your mindset and attitude. You will be able to approach any challenge with a positive “yes, I can” attitude.
